On the Gospel of Matthew 4:12-23
3rd Sunday of Ordinary Time
In last week’s Gospel we saw John the Baptist, (the last great prophet before Jesus), who belonged to a religious group that initiated new members through the rite of immersion in water, baptism. The rite used by John was symbolic of moral conversion, through repentance, confession of sins and a change of heart – a state required for receiving God’s salvation.

St Margaret of Hungary OP
Feast Day: 18 January
Today we celebrate the Feast of St Margaret of Hungary. A saint I must confess I knew very little of before I entered the Order. However
she has much to say to us and we can learn a lot from her.

On the Gospel of John 1:29-34
2nd Sunday of Ordinary Time
Last Sunday we celebrated the Feast of the Baptism of Our Lord and read the account of this baptism from Matthew’s Gospel. This Sunday, we have a second look at the same scene, this time benefitting from the clear sight of John the “eagle-eyed evangelist”. And sight is central to this Gospel passage: the first and last sentences are both about seeing. Rather than action, this passage is about sight followed by testimony.

On the Gospel of Matthew 3:13-17
The Baptism of Our Lord
The apostle Paul (also known as Saul) was an enthusiastic persecutor of Christians before his conversion to Christ. When the first martyr, Stephen, was stoned to death, we are told that 'Saul approved of their killing him' (Acts 8:1). Quickly he became more active in his persecution of the followers of Jesus: he went from house to house and 'dragged off both men and women and put them in prison' (Acts 8:3).
Paul's conversion, perhaps the most famous conversion of all time, occurred on the road to Damascus. The details are well known – a bright light flashed around him, he fell down, heard a voice, and was struck blind. Later, in Damascus, he was healed of his blindness and 'began to preach in the synagogues that Jesus is the Son of God' (Acts 9:20). What is significant for this Sunday's gospel, though, is what the voice actually said on the road to Damascus: 'Saul, Saul, why are you persecuting me' (Acts 9:4). Saul was persecuting followers of Jesus, not Jesus himself. Why did the voice say me, and not them?
