Irish Dominicans announce details of launch of Prayer Initiative for Vocations

The Irish Dominican friars are pleased to announce the launch of a prayer initiative for vocations. As the initiative of prayer is for all Dominican vocations, we are delighted that the formal launch will take place in the monastery of Saint Catherine of Siena, Drogheda, Co Louth on Sunday January 15th during the 9.00 am community Mass for the Dominican nuns.
The prayer initiative will have as a focus an icon of Saint Dominic (pictured) which has been specially commissioned for this time of prayer. It is hoped that the image of the founder of the Dominican Order will draw people to reflect on his life and legacy and in turn, through his intercession, draw more men and women to follow the Lord in the Dominican way.

Preparing for the New Translation of the Roman Missal

From Advent 2011, the Mass in English will be slightly different. The translation of the Latin original of the Missal (book of prayers for the Mass) has been redone. Most of the changes affect the parts of the Mass said by the priest, but there will be some slight changes in the parts said by the people. This change in the translation of the Missal is a great opportunity to deepen our understanding of the Mass, and to look in more depth at the prayers that make it up. With this in mind, a large group of Dominicans gathered in St Mary's Priory, Tallaght (pictured) today to study some of the new texts and to learn about the history of the new translation. Bishop John McAreavey, the representative of the Irish Bishops on the International Commission on English in the Liturgy (ICEL), led two seminars, and answered questions from the assembled friars.
Preparing for the new translation is a task for all Catholics though, not just celebrants. Have a look at the resources offered by the bishops of the US, England and Wales, and Ireland.

Sheena Darcy and Monica Rapeanu were officially received as new members of the Lay Dominicans in Ireland during the celebration of the Eucharist at Saint Saviour's priory, Dublin on the feast of the conversion of Saint Paul (January 25th). Sheena and Monica were joined by friends, colleagues, members of the lay Dominicans and a number of the friars of the community for the celebration.

We were delighted to welcome Fr Bruno Cadoré OP, the 87th Master of the Order of Preachers, to St Saviour's Priory yesterday. He was here for an informal visit, as part of his initial attempts to 'learn the Order'. He met with the students for nearly two hours, and listened intently to our stories, to our assessment of the situation of the Church in Ireland, and to our hopes and desires for the future. He spoke to us about his understanding of the Dominican vocation: 'We should be like John the Baptist', he said, 'we must decrease and Christ must increase'. He said that we Dominicans must not seek to make ourselves visible, but that we should seek to make Christ visible and tangible for others. In short, the Dominican vocation means simply 'introducing people to your best friend'. Photos inside!
Upcoming Vocation Weekends

The Irish Dominican friars are arranging some vocation weekends in the new year. Usually, these weekends are by invitation to those who are being accompanied by the vocations director for a period of time. However, since the proposed weekends are some time away, there is an opportunity to claim a place on some of these weekends if you are interested in our way of life by making contact with the vocations director soon. The dates for these 'live-in' or 'come and see' weekends are as follows:
21st to 23rd January 2011
25th to 27th February 2011
18th to 20th March 2011
Vocation weekends are designed to give participants an opportunity to live for a weekend with one of our communities in Ireland, to take a full and active part in the prayer and communal events of the friars, to meet many of the brothers (especially those in formation), to ask as many questions as you have about Dominican life and to experience the work and ministry of Dominican friars in Ireland. There will also be some input on our life by some of the brethren. Many of our younger brothers now in formation have found these weekends to be of great help in their discernment.
